BEAUTIFUL AND IMPOSSIBLE SONG LYRICS

It was a clear and sunny day. I was driving with my sunroof open while listening to one of my favorite music groups, The Stylistics. Russell Thompkins, Jr., the lead singer, filled my car with his melodious falsetto voice, a voice that still cause me pause. The song playing was, “Because  I Love You, Girl.” It was a beautiful song, one I did not recall hearing from The Stylistics back in the day. It immediately caught my attention. I continued listening. Oh, what a pretty song, I thought! When Russell got to the second verse, he sang the following lyrics, and these are the words that made me smile:
If you should ask me for the moon
Of course I’d show up with the moon
No matter what you ask I’ll try
and you know why
Because I love you girl…
“Because I Love you, Girl” written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss

As I was thinking and reminiscing, I recall the group, After 7 singing these beautiful lyrics years later. The song is “Ready or Not...

I’ll give you the sun
The rain, the moon
The stars and the mountains
I’ll give you the world
And all that you wish for
And even more...
Lyrics written by Babyface (Kenneth Brian Edmonds)

These are beautiful, loving, and meaningful song lyrics. They may cause you to close your eyes and smile while you reminisce of a past or present love interest.

(Just for the record, I was reminiscing with my eyes open as I was driving and listening to The Stylistics.)

When you are listening to figurative language in song lyrics, you may even feel that the singer is directing the soft, soothing sounds, and words, straight to you, and they feel so believable! Yes, they feel quite believable, but they are IMPOSSIBLE. Like I heard a comedian say years ago, “They lie! They lie! That ain’t their stuff!”

Nevertheless, we must admit that these lyrics are just wonderful. In both examples, the singers are offering the moon! There is something special about the moon. Even though offering the moon is impossible, it is used to express the singers’ deep love or willingness to do anything for our love.  The moon symbolizes something grand, beautiful, yet unattainable. It suggests a desire to give the person something amazing, exceptional, and marvelous—just like offering to give someone the sun, a mountain, or the world!

Remember that lyrics can convey devotion and love through pure imagination! Imagination is the power in song lyrics, or maybe I should refer to these lyrics as love power—the love power message is still meaningful, even if the message is believable, beautiful, and totally and utterly IMPOSSIBLE.

SN: Yes! I still love music from the 70’s and 80’s.

One in love and music,

June
